On this tumultuous (weather-wise, and personally stomach-wise) day, the Habs convened upon a Lavalois golf course to knock some mini-balls around, exchange smiles, quote some clichés and pass a few cheques into their children's foundation. Also for Carey Price to show off his "better than Bergevin's Draft Day" pants.
It's good to see them again.
And I'm still ignoring the fact the Magical Spearing Midget is part of the team.
To help you make this glorious day more fun, I've created a Habs Charity Golf Tourney Bingo card! Prepare to BINGO in 5 minutes!

I walked into the Bell Centre and a hockey game broke out!
Oh how I missed my Habs...
And good on the people who lined up since 6am in -20 weather (but it wasn't that cold if you dressed right and the wind wasn't too bad either, unless you're me carrying a drink from Five Guys and didn't put my gloves on). They got the good seats and met a few players for their effort. Personally I just got to work early to leave early (5:30) and walked right in without a lineup.
Really didn't need to be reminded how shitty the music is in that place...
- Seriously. Did someone let Blunden troll the sound booth with a Casio keyboard? This is what happens when you put him on waivers!
- Over 17k at the scrimmage. Right away Shitsburgh is loling that they had 18k. Well that's nice, but really I have no idea how they counted. The nosebleeds were getting people, and it was fucking cold outside.
- Really don't know if Bourque's backhander works in a real game or not...
- Desharnais to Pacioretty. All sauce. Top shelf. Goalies won't have a chance.
- It's a meaningless scrimmage but Price makes 3 quick saves and robs a goal with his glove. Then laughs.
- Yes. We were booing the refs. It's all in good fun.
- After Erik Cole's lame penalty shot, the refs actually called two penalties with actual powerplays,
- And OMFG Kaberle scores his one goal for the year.
- WE WANT PK! *clapclapclapclapclap*
- And I want the little brats sitting next to me to go away.
- Emelin was wearing the bird cage since he came back. Takes a puck in the throat. Team White zooms by his fallen body for a two-on-one that Price stops but the rebound is ignored by his confused defenseman for a goal. Bastards! You killed Emelin! (He was OK).
- Fans were chanting Carey and he was saluting back. Then Budaj got some love on his side of the rink. I loves my goalies.
- Speaking of Budaj, he's rocking a mullet.
- Shootout time! Also known as the Galchenyuk Bonanza.
- And he scores.
- Gallagher does his best Patrick Kane, and scores.
- Chants for PK in the shootout.
- Cube gets a huge welcome home cheer.
- Prust tries to do the fancy spin through the legs and fails. Gets an A for the effort.
- Tinordi is like WTF is a shootout.
- Markov celebrates his goal in a Markovian cheer.
- Well Patches broke Price. Should be ready for Saturday though.
- Was waiting for the puck to bounce off the post in the shootout and smack Emelin in the face. From the bench.
- SHOULD HAVE LET THE GOALIES GO!
- Ref actually asked Price if he could continue and he just waved.
- Prust ends the shootout, Scott Hartnell style.
Seriously. I missed my Habs. Fuck you NHL.

Waking up to 350 tweets
Forgive me on this because I'm currently typing with my left hand while lying on my sofa on what is officially my final day of vacation. And it's pouring rain. And Toaster is literally sleeping comfy on my right arm with his ass in my face. Oh dogs. Gotta love 'em.
With everything technically ratified last night, I went to sleep. No way was I waiting for the news that the Flyers to trade for Brian Boucher again. And PK's contract WILL GET DONE but I was pretty sure it wasn't going to happen at midnight. I did, however, go to sleep unhappy with how Louis Leblanc's been treated. No invite to camp. Fans crapping on him without even knowing one bit what's going on with him. Or how Hamilton ABSOLUTELY SUCKS this year and how Sylvain Lefebvre was indeed not the right choice for the team thus completely validating my fears that this new batch of kids will be under the guidance of a rookie coach who sticks a guys like Leblanc on a line with an ECHLer warming a roster spot and a blockhead who barely belongs on a fourth line. (And don't get me started about his apparent obsession with Stortini). Never mind the lack of powerplay time. Never mind NOT EVEN USING HIM IN A SHOOTOUT, in which they lost the game because of it. And I didn't even get to his high ankle sprain, which is obviously still a problem.
But then I woke up, late. And my Twitter feed was like trying to read the Dead Sea Scrolls of repeated information and rapid fire camp updates. And someone was live-tweeting a football game (Euro football). What a mess. Took me hours between feeding a dog, feeding myself, and throwing a ball down the hall for the dog to figure out that:
1. Gomez has been sent home to fish happily in Alaska because the Habs don't want him getting injured playing hockey and therefore wouldn't be able to use that fancy amnesty buyout. He will be put on waivers though, and once he clears, he won't take a roster spot.
2. Leblanc will be one of the Bulldogs newly invited to camp, sort of, afterall! And he should be here for the intra-squad fun time at the Bell Centre on Thursday that's going to be a riot of a mess of fans BUT I'll still try to get in if I finish work on time. Right now the Bulldogs are in fucking Abbotsford for a back-to-back game. That's going to be a mess though... Guess there's no way the AHL pauses itself for the NHL.
3. Cam Barker mysteriously has a job. Playing hockey. Now with the Canucks.
4. Galchenyuk was on the wing with Eller and Gionta (because Pleky is day to day with those ribs). And when I typed that, I first typed "Galchenyuk was on the win".
5. NO EXCUSES is now on the wall in the dressing room, and Bergevin put a carpet over the CH logo so the press will no longer be stomping on it ('cause they're stomping jerks).
So yea, hockey and stuff. Woohoo!

Pre-season Game 8: Labaume City
Habs ended pre-season with a solid full 60-minute effort in their rematch with the Lightning up in Quebec City. Of course it wouldn't be a win against the Bolts without Ryan Malone being an asshat. After running around the whole night, he finally took a run at Campoli's head. Malone should be ShanaBanned some time this week.
Meanwhile the other douche, Steve Downie, mixed up his Kostitsyns. They had a battle all night but surprisingly he didn't go the absolute douchey road. Except for his pushing Darche into Price which knocked over the net and then looked at the ref with a "they did that on purpose" look.
Stamkos was rather quiet, except for the one shift he found himself facing Spacek. (Do not do that ever again). Vince was the weenie instead.
Hey look! An NHL lineup!
- Bottle this Gomez. Looks to be a fine vintage.
- Diaz is as smooth a talker as he is a player. Sure he tripped a few times, but Streit 2.0 really improved in a short time.
- Which sucks for Weber but I actually like him as a forward. Puts out 3 defensemen, he's pretty good on the boards, and combining with Palushaj they created plenty of chances. Yes his line was on for the Lightning goal, but Engqvist could have helped by picking up the backdoor guy...
- PK! PK! PK!
- Yea having Pleky on the point removes a threat and allows teams to just ignore him, but his vision is second to none. Also I noticed the way the team moves around the box.
- Goals from all over. Gio victimizing MAB (no surprise) for a shorthanded beauty. Gomez with a goal only Gomez could do on the powerplay. Darche tipped in a shot by Spacek, while Cole got a gift from Brett Clark and roofed it.
- Cammy's goal came after the two of them had their way with the Lightning. It was during the play after Malone's douchebaggery. Pleky rounded the circle and the net with a guy shadowing him closely, flipped the puck to Cammy for a one-timer.
- Near the end Price joined the crowd in doing the wave. I need video of this. (Ed. note: VIDEO FOUND!)
- Hey coach? Can we keep Palushaj?
See? Your panic was somewhat premature. This shit starts for real in a few days!

The end is nigh!
No, I'm not talking ridiculous pre-season freakouts. I'm talking the end of pre-season! And THANK GOD FOR THAT. You're all driving me insane...
So naturally the Habs returned their remaining Junior kids, which is fine. Would have been nice to see Gallagher with the 9-game stint but things are about to get serious. No more camp mode for Martin. Also saves them a contract, which he'll probably get next summer. And I pity the team that faces him in his first game back on Saturday... (When he was cut from Team Canada he responded with a 2 goal, 3 assist night).
Bournival raced back to Shawinigan and jumped in the lineup. Naturally he opened the scoring for his team.
The Hamilton Bulldogs have opened their pre-season with a 4-1 win over the BingoSens in Victoriaville. Avtsin got two goals. Trotter got 3 assists and an elbow to the head (argh). Willsie and Lefebvre got the other two in a "come from behind" win after being down 1-0. Mayer was in nets. Try-out and killer-of-Montreal-Juniors Olivier Dame-Malka said hello with a huge hit and an assist.
Morgan Ellis has been on quite a roll since returning to Cape Breton. He was instrumental in tonight's comeback win for the Screaming Eagles.
Jarred Tinordi joins his fellow prospects on the captain list, as the London Knights just announced him to be their new captain. Bournival and Ellis are captains of their respective teams. Darren Dietz is an assistant captain of the Saskatoon Blades.
Word is out that Trevor Timmins is checking out the Hershey Bears. Or...maybe he was checking out the BabyPenguins. Either way he was in Hershey and wasn't exactly there for the chocolate. This news of course sent most Habs fans all a twitter, because you know this 1-6 preseason record hasn't done that already. (You're all loony).
TOMORROW! Bulldogs in a rematch with the BingoSens in Drummondville. Habs in a rematch with the Lightning in Quebec City. Habs fans will still be a pack of psychos.

Pre-season Game 7: Experimental
So yea, this one was rather crap. Much like the rain! Heeeey getting those November-type games in early I suppose? Probably could make this entry quick...
- Stamkos is a weenie. Really tired of his petulant superstar act.
- Gallagher's adjusting at an alarming rate. He's earned everything he's getting and hopefully he'll get those 9 games to build on his incredible talent.
- Must be really annoying having Marc Denis blabber away in a language you don't understand and then randomly hear your name so you assume he's talking about you, eh Price? *he nods*
- The experiment on the powerplay isn't so bad. They didn't score, because what would be a seriously focused one-timer was held too long or just released into a thicket of feet. Or off the post.
- Roloson is such a fucking drama queen.
- Diaz and Yemelin are going through some serious adjustments. Diaz seems to be learning quickly but that may be a language thing. Still, someone must have whispered into Yemelin's ear to hit something because he started doing so in the 3rd.
- If it was a choice between Campoli or Spacek, I'd take the Campoli.
- I would be happy to watch 60 minutes of PK just motoring down the ice through everyone. SKILLS!
- Bournival let off a shot that went right through Roloson. Hit the fucking post...but still, this kid's gonna be a good one. He's an intelligent player, and Team Canada could have used him last year.
- Yea you know it's preseason when Cammy flubs his trademark on-bended-knee shot with a wide open net...
- Request to Pierre Groulx: tie Budaj to the crossbar with short rope so he won't go down so much.
The latest freakout! Martin is going to meet with each player individually to discuss things like progress and work ethic (since some haven't really kicked it in gear this preseason) and upcoming expectations. Nothing wrong with discussions. Your coach du year Guy Boucher meets with players all the time to discuss similar things. So what's the problem? Because he's not the sexy pick it's "OMGPROBLEMS!" but if it's the sexy pick like Boucher it's "yes yes what an intelligent dude"?
I want preseason to be over already. One. More. Game.

Pre-season Game 6: Way better than yesterday
Habs bring the scrubs and ice 6 NHLers (including Price) to the Bruins AHL squad and 11 NHLers and manage to be a handful. It was a skating marathon tonight. Probably their best game of the preseason without actually being on the real roster. Sadly a great game was ruing by blind zebras who apparently forgot big daddy Campbell isn't in charge any more. Their inconsistency is more aggravating than Spacek's brain farts. Well, almost....
- If this is how Price plays behind no defence for 60 minutes, I think we're all totally OK with that.
- Dear Hockey Gods, give Gallagher a bone please? And a goal. All those posts...
- Welcome to the Bell Center, Mr. Bournival! Looked quite solid out there, and no signs of a shoulder problem which he routinely slammed into a few Booins.
- Game could have used Pacioretty, who had the flu goddammit.
- Captain America had bite tonight. Was pissed with the refs antics in the faceoffs, ran full steam ahead on the puck, tossed Lucic into the boards quite heavily.
- Speaking of those boards, Tinordi loves them. To throw people into them.
- DeSimone: you're hired. And he's off to the Bulldogs camp for a contract he so very deserves.
- Spacek was better in his first game. Right now, the new leaner Spacek was crap. Lucky for him he was bailed by Price more than once. I kind of want him to take penalties just to get him off the ice.
- Regardless of his mistake on the Bruins goal, Gabby Dumont is a barrel of energy. Maybe he'll take White's place until he's ready to go?
- Or Blunden.
- EVEN WOYWITKA WAS PRETTY GOOD TONIGHT, SPACEK!
- Cammy wants 50 goals.
- Gallagher's up to 13 shots, placing him 2nd in the league. It doesn't count those that went off the post. (Pacioretty leads preseason with 15 in only 2 games).
- Jorje is in fine form, blocking shots.
- Diaz's shot will do better once he's used to playing here.
Tweet of the night: @AndrewBerkshire If Thornton bitched any more he'd be on Sex and the City.
Preseason is almost over, folks. And we'll finally see some actual roster players... More cuts today, including Brock Trotter who was playing. Hoping Jodoin will stamp out his evil turnovers. Unfortunately he's on waivers so DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH HIM, YOU MANITOBA-PLAYER ACCUMULATING WINNIPEG JETS! Hisss...
Leave the gun, take the Campoli
The Godfather might be a bit down on his second unit powerplay peoples. Diaz needs more AHL time, Yemelin wasn't brought over here to run it, Spacek just plain sucks, Weber can't run it alone, and all our forwards are the type that excel better down low (because SERGEI was the Kostitsyn that quarterbacked powerplays you numbskull). So Habs went out and got Chris Campoli. Basically he's the new Wiz, only cheaper. And not for 6 years.
So long as he doesn't really come here to play defence, it's fine. Though I'm hoping Ladouceur can teach him a few things...

Pre-season Game 4: scrubs
It'll take a meteor to wipe out the entire depth chart for Mitera-Woywitka to pair up in a real NHL game. Unless Jodoin can whip these boys into shape.
Team had a serious case of "we never played together"-itis. And I mean BAD.
Tonight's game was a bit of a wash, with a worse lineup then last night. But Beaulieu showed off his prowess, and Cammy showed he's rip roaring for a better season. Price is finally warmed up and ready to go and won't be the victim of green-defencemen forgetting to turn around or how to skate backwards. Archambault has great skill and should do so much better now that he's gone from Val D'Or. Palushaj played his best game so far but it's going to be tough to pick between him and Dumont. Either can stick but could just as well head back to Hamilton with their numbers on Gauthier's speed dial. Overall solid effort, piss-poor outcome, and Chris Neil is still a douche. But hey, you know it's preason when Neil scores goals. On the powerplay. (Well one was really Woywitka with the Roman Hamrlik Award for turning his feet the wrong way and deflecting in).
Only thing that CAN'T happen in real games is Gio's retaliation slash to Carkner. Doucheref ignores the high stick (two-hander) to Pleky's face but calls the slash almost right after. You know that's going to happen so just play it smart. I mean they spent the whole game ignoring Neil's invites to start shit...
Another injury: Schultz. A knee ding off the boards. Fuck man, are the Bulldogs going to have anyone left to play?

You know that's going to happen so just play it smart. I mean they spent the whole game ignoring Neil's invites to start shit...
Another injury: Schultz. A knee ding off the boards. Fuck man, are the Bulldogs going to have anyone left to play?

Pre-season Game 3: Power to the children
Max Pacioretty: 9 shots on net, two goals and an extra in the shootout. Absolutely instrumental in tonight's outcome.
Brendan Gallagher: 4 shots on net and an absolute cog on the line.
Scott Gomez: First foray into pre-season action, 6 shots on net, game tying goal to bring it into OT, and 1 assist. Centering the two kids, his line made up for 19 of the total 33 shots and the big push for a comeback.
It's only pre-season but you have to like what happened tonight. In a line up that held a combined 621 regular season games to the Sens combined 2 594 (Alfie skews it), the leaders lead the way and the kids kept digging in. As with the case with most Habs games the powerplay was the key, taking advantage of silly penalties. Similarly the start of the game was flat and full of screw ups (they keep bowling Price over and interfering with him...guess it's only comforting in knowing Henry won't be in the lineup for real), but it's getting there. Ending on a high is nothing but great for these kids. It's nothing but good news when you see (or hear) Raphael Diaz do everything to block a shot to help with the comeback. It's nothing but good news to hear how Gallagher's forechecking is causing fits. But it all starts with the powerplay: to be that strong with the man advantage without really any of your regulars in the lineup? Of course the 2nd powerplay goal was a heads up play by Lawson to Pacioretty who was out cherry picking and went in all alone on Anderson. But hey, whatever works.
I just love seeing Pacioretty playing again and looking like that dominant REAL power forward we all knew he could be. Gomez made a statement with his game. And Gallagher...it's tough knowing he's gotta go back to Junior but I can't wait to see him at the WJC.
Back at it tomorrow, against the Sens again.

Pre-season Game 2: The man without fear
You know their names.
Max Pacioretty, the player who nearly lost his ability to function properly let alone play the game he loves so much, stepped onto the very same ice tonight looking like his usually fast skating net-seeking self.
Josh Gorges, who finally resolved to surgery to fix his torn knees that he skated on for about 7 years, stepped back onto the ice tonight looking like his usually steady self.
The score sucked, and Lindy Ruff is an ass, but the kids are alright. While the Sabres dressed their standard NHL lineup save for 3 invisible rookies (invisible until they took many stupid penalties), the Habs tossed out the kids in all situations backed by a slightly more adept defence to give them a hand.
One coach evaluates, the other has Small Dog Syndrome:
- Guess which one? Hint: the one evaluating his crop looks like he belongs on The Office, the douchey one rhymes with Mindy Gruff.
- I missed Josh Gorges so very much.
- I'm so happy to see Patches back out there. A goal would have been nice, but he was close!
- I missed watching PK play. Puts a smile on my face everytime. Of course he scored, then launched himself into Gallagher's arms.
- Palushaj and Engqvist had a better game tonight. Palushaj was buzzing a bit more. Engqvist is like another defenceman, master of the stick check. His speed isn't in regular season form though.
- DeSimone needs a contract. Like, now. (For Hamilton).
- Holy crap Brendan Gallagher is even better than I knew he was.
- Beaulieu got over his bright-light jitters nicely and gave us a solid performance. His shot left more to be desired but once his hands stop shaking he'll be fine. Reminds me of when PK when he first walked out there. Had a team leading 27 minutes of ice time.
- Gabby Dumont: never change you little heat-seeking missile. Perfect for our 4th line one day.
- Avtsin's hands are so slick. He'll be a good one one day. Of course he's Russian so the press have already shipped him off to Columbus.
- HunterBishop can't catch a break other than breaking himself on the new boards. I love him, but he's always in the medical room.
- Seriously ref, stop waving guys out of the faceoff dot for no damn reason!
- Unfortunately for Patches he apparently needs to be thrown into a stancion and nearly paralyzed for the refs to actually call a penalty on any infraction sent his way.
- Kind of like how PK gets 2 for roughing while Myers gets nothing for doing the exact same thing. Nice to see those double-standards still exist. Consistently inconsistent!
- Desharnais looked mighty fine between Patches and Gionta. And wins faceoffs. Bad news for Gomez, but thankfully we don't need to worry about little DD.
- In need of a goal JMart had the kids out on a PP late in the 3rd to see how they would respond and they nearly rewarded him with one. Lindy Ruff would have switched goalies and put out his top line.
- Vanek with the failiest of fail moves of preseason: wide open net, shovels puck right into Budaj who wasn't even in position.
- So happy Habs didn't draft that useless slow lunkhead Kassian.
- When the game was done, RDS's awkward new addition Marc Denis said Martin will have a lot to evaluate from this and so would Lindy Ruff. It's probably easier for Ruff: his rookies sucked and took all the stupid (and sometimes dangerous) penalties.
- Gallagher's face after the game: ^_________________________________^

Pre-season Game 1: Get yer ya-yas out
Oh glorious hockey! How good it is to see you!
Sure the gumby-legged tentative display wasn't exactly what we were hoping to see, but it's pre-season. None of these guys have played against another team since Nathan Horton's fugly face was front and center on our screen. (And if you do the "ya but" crap, please note that most of the Stars players did play in that silly rookie tournament thing). However I must congratulate the crowd: they were chill. It was refreshing. They even cheered the team politely at the end and were rocking the house when the team started waking up. This is encouraging! Perhaps they finally understood what PRE-SEASON is?
Naturally in the first wonky game it's a little difficult to make evaluations on the players considering they're rusty and aren't really up to game speed. To me, I look at how one progresses during the course of the game, especially the rookies or newly imported European players. If they show a gradual improvement, then they'll be fine. Players like Palushaj got going gradually into the 3rd after a very wary and tentative start. (He literally looked terrified at the start). Players like Massé, however, did little throughout the game to improve their position on the team and will most likely head down to Wheeling eventually.
So how about some pre-season bullet points!
- I'm very proud this crowd has finally understood what a "moment of silence" means. You could hear a pin drop during the reflections on the terrible events of this past offseason.
- RDS in fine form: starting early with their Mickey Ribs lovefest. Thank god we only see these guys once a year, and thank god it's in February.
- And yea whatever Mickey Ribs, you look fantastic going through a bunch of rusty rookies.
- Yannick Weber was the best defenceman on the ice, with the most minutes on the team and the only one (other than Tinordi) who was a plus.
- Pre-season taught this team in the 2nd that yes there was indeed a whole new world on the other side of the other blue line!
- And shoot high on Raycroft. Instant goals.
- Also pre-season taught everyone that this team still sucks at faceoffs.
- Erik Cole gets the first goal. (Hit the crossbar just before). So nice to see him victimize goaltenders for OUR team instead of victimizing our goalies...
- Andrei Kostitsyn was a beast. He showed that when he is The Man on his line he can do wonderful things. It was wonderful to see him protect the puck for long stretches of play and using nearly the entire rink to do so while having at least two guys on his back trying to get the puck, even after he circled their zone a few times and had it pushed offside he never let up. Had a killer goal that knocked the water bottle off. (Assisted by Price!)
- Woywitka was insanely happy to score a goal. Still needs work on the rest of his game but he'll make a fine injury call up.
- Defense is not throwing yourself into your goal crease and interfering with your goalie, but I'm sure you'll stop doing that right?
- Brock Trotter was the best non-starter forward but needs linemates that can follow his speed and skill. Crowd went wooooo on his spin-o-rama.
- Brock Trotter's pretty face still hasn't changed either.
- Ian Schultz made a few British fans happy. After all, they came for the fights.
- Yemelin looked good! And sent a guy cartwheeling.
- Diaz's shot is excellent. I do believe he'll be hard at work in Hamilton and will be looking at those points records PK and Weber set up.
- Poor Hal Gill was the baby sitter tonight.
- Pleky's skills are so underrated.
- Our Swiss Misters are fantastic young players with plenty of upside.
- Oh and please, Raphael Diaz, keep talking. I love the way you speak.
Tomorrow Team B takes on the Sabres. Looking forward to see how Jorje is, and how Dumont will take the bright lights of the Bell Centre. He loves that stuff.
I missed you, hockey. I really did.

Training Day

He's not fat! He's just well rounded.
Seriously though, "Yemelin" is actually Russian for "Mack Truck". All that flab is really a protective layer of thick skin. I wouldn't get too worried about his apparent physique. After all, he spins around the rink like he's walking on air, survived years on the big KHL ice without much problem including World Championships, and hits like a battering ram on nitro.
Actually the purpose of training camp should be to see who survives encounters with the Gremelin. I think he hit everyone not in goalie gear today.
Will be interesting to see his work in actual game action.

Roll out the red carpet
Hockey season is about to start. Like tomorrow. We smelt it in the cold, crisp October air that rolled in. Soon it'll be about boots, shovels, and snow tires. And already the pundits are predicting doom.
Frankly predictions are for tools.
I don't like predictions. I don't like previews. I don't need a roundtable of guys in suits who get paid to repeat the same refrain every year. "Ovechkin/Crosby are tops! Penguins will win the Cup! The Sedins are inseparable!" Don't try too hard folks, you might bust an original vein. Assuming, of course, you have one.
Take your negativity, your Price hate, your Smurf jokes, your lack of toughness, and your warped Halak-saved-the-season nonsense and shove it. It's all about the Secret. Think positive and the Universe will reward you. Do like Cammalleri said. "Drop the puck."
And remember, the Stanley Cup is not awarded after game 1.
This afternoon while at work I had the Coyotes playing Dinamo Riga streaming live on my other screen. It was great to see Brock Trotter again, who did all the work for Dinamo's only goal. Actually he created the first real scoring chance in the first period, coming out of the penalty box. Looks like he's playing as a winger, but he also took a faceoff on relief (and won it). He's still flying, still dangerous. Seems to be doing OK on the extra large ice surface. Even got a gorgeous breakaway that was replayed a few times but didn't score. Actually he had a few dangerous opportunities but was either hauled down, stopped, or missed. He's wearing 91, which is his Bulldogs number reversed.
But what an atmosphere. The Bell Centre terrorists could learn a thing or two from the Latvian crowd. They sang non-stop, played drums, on introduction they scream the players family name after the PA guy says the first name, they cheered their team even when they were clearly hopeless outmatched and losing 3-1. They gave goalie Chris Holt the love when he collected his player of the game trophy (though I'd have given it to Trotter or Hartigan, his linemate and the goalscorer, for their great play). The energy was completely positive. I wish we could feel the same kind of power here for our Habs...
Disappointed that Ryan White was sent down today. Though I understand he's a victim of contracts and is one of the few that doesn't need to worry about waivers, it still sucks. The way the NHL is these days I'd rather let the kids play. Anyway, I'm sure he'll be back very soon.
Frankly I think White will be this year's Tom Pyatt. He'll stick once his waiver days are upon him. Until then, he gets to benefit off Randy & Randy.
Come back soon, Ryan.
Seems Price got that flu that's been going around lately and might not start tomorrow. If he does somehow find the power to start, maybe he'll vomit on Grabovski as revenge for spearing him in the jock...

Hockey shakes...
The anticipation is killing me for tomorrow!!!
And then I find out it's not going to be on TV. Well, not any channel I have. Seriously, RDS? A 20 years celebration? THE FUCKING HABS ARE PLAYING THEIR FIRST HOME PRESEASON GAME! What? That quiet you guys heard over MSG is what the washroom might sounds like at the Bell Center tomorrow. The Preseason crowd, especially an excited dying to see the new team crowd, is just as loud as a Game 7 crowd. I kid you not. We even sing the anthem!
And then mom calls me to tell me she's actually going to take me out to dinner tomorrow anyway. So make me proud my Habs. Gimme a win on my birthday while I eat delicious sushi.
And since I like to waste money I think I might find someone to customize my blank ASG East jersey. Or weasle my brother to do it for me. Hey, I paid for his hockey all last year! I'm the only big sister he's got! Ah whatever.
What did they say about mixing hockey and politics?
So, apparently the feud between Sergei and Grabs was resolved via political intervention. The president of Belarus requested it! How awesome is that? OK, well, I'd rather see an intense Sergei knocked Grabs on his ass, but still... Imagine if the guys had any political savy to request something from the president in return? Like say, "Put more money into education and we'll be friends...for the good of the people!" Or in his case, stop fixing the votes in his favour AHEM but I'd rather not have my dear Sergei go missing over a political opinion. I don't know what a "personal request" from Lukashenko means... Poor Sergei.
Imagine if Obama stepped in and asked Komisarek and Lucic to stop their feud? With Canada and the States being such important allies and all. I dunno why he'd care but say he walked in on a game and the two were destroying each other. Say maybe it scared him. Knowing that Komisarek is a supporter, and to curb the violence on tv, he'd ask him them to make nice. Then imagine Lucic laughing his ass off, only to turn around, grab Komi's sweater and pull it over his head. And as he continues to pound away at the big man, Lucic asks Obama, "I'll stop if you fix that certain lumber issue you guys fucked up for us Canucks." Meanwhile Komi wails, "Mr. President, I need health care!!!"
Harper knows better than to get in between a hockey feud. "If the Canadians on the Leafs and Habs want to punch each other to oblivion, then they have my blessing. Think of the entertainment revenue! Go Flames!"
A bold new look
OK, Price's new mask is ALL KINDS OF AWESOME. Yes, so awesome that it needs caps. The Gumper! And skeleton zombie Dryden (who was supposed to be Plant, haha oops). And a string of numbers representing the defensemen these players had fighting for them stream down to the 100 logo on the chin. Very cool, very appropriate (to have the Dmen numbers there). And he's crowned with the Montreal skyline. Though my only problem with it is the CH on the top is kind of small. That's what I love about his cowboy/country singer ones. The CH on top is GIANT.

One more day...

My cursor was hovering over the "purchase" button for the game Thursday. It's my birthday! But, I oddly enough found the willpower to not click it. The bank account would have hated me if I did, so this is probably a good thing. Anyway, I think my parents are taking me out to dinner to my favourite Japanese restaurant (Aikawa, I love you).
Notes from Camp Les Habs, after day 2 and 3 passed:
- PRICE HAS A NEW MASK! And shutout his teammates in "game 2". Blame the red pads.
- Mayer's mask disturbs me every time... I think I just don't like seeing ears on them.
- Someone on Habs I/O realized that if you anagram "Brian Gionta" you get "I Born A Giant".
- Brrrrrrrrrock Trotter potted two goals and cut his hair.
- SuperPleky is looking good with Gionta. They're both speedy skaters so I think they fit nicely. Anyway, Pleky gave Missiean a taste of his MAF-Destroying Slapshot.
- Best line of the day was Johanssen's centering Trotter and Russell. I smell good days ahead in Steeltown!
- Dagger kissed the end boards. And then Rhino destroyed him into pastry.
- Rhino is staying true to his nickname, and destroyed Stewart.
- The HMCS Hal Gill is here! And there was much rejoicing.
- And Gill paired with Gorges: Master and Commander?
- I'm told Markov and Mara are a solid pair. The M&M Defense, ready to pick out the "Blue Ones".
- Travis Touchdown Moen was also on the Gionta-Pleky line, and didn't look out of place.
- Gionta can score backwards. Classic Gionta for the "win".
- Sergei and Chipper can't play yet because they're still rehabing surgery. But! They're on the ice practicing on the other rink away from Rhino looking to destroy their life.
- Speaking of destroying lives, Patches is hiting everything that moves. Delicious.
- What did I say about inventing controversy or making shit up without checking facts? What did I say about the captain stuff? STFU! Just because Martin says he'd like Markov to be one of the leaders on the ice (a no brainer) DOES NOT MEAN HE SAID HE ASKED HIM TO BE CAPTAIN!!! It totally puts Markov in an awkward position, 'cause he knows how much people nitpick and blow things out of proportion. However it did give us some lovely sound bites of our quiet Russian. Hilarious stuff too! Making fun of the media right to their faces in a polite but semi-sarcastic manner. But I love the way he handles them. Gives them enough to chew on, and absolutely nothing at all. And from the rare amount of times he does speak to the media, what he says is usually gold. But, rule number 1: Until it's up on the Canadiens page, it ain't true.
- Markov needs a new roommate though, now that Komisarek went to the dark side. Though he'd rather have his own room, since he's nearing 600 games.
- Happiest kid in the world: Philippe Lefebvre. Heading back to Drummondville, with a shiny new 3-year contract in his napsack. Congrats kid!
- Martin is the happy dictator. This is HIS team. And you know what? I think I like that.
Other notes:
- Hockeyville Terrace was on last night. That's right. THERE WAS HOCKEY ON MY TV AND STUFF! And the Canucks succeeded to bore me to death in a 2-1 victory over the Islanders. And Tavares had the flu. And the Islanders still need to be taught how to pass the damn puck. Oh, and the Canucks introduced me to a lovely Russian named Sergei Shirokov, who scored both goals from the exact same location (backdoor).
- The Monster has minor heart surgery after his heart rate wouldn't return back to normal and he collapsed. Apparently he didn't eat the day before. Um...OK buddy.
- Higgy scored the lone goal in the Rags/Bruins 2-1 loss, but there's no way he misses from standing right in front of the net. Then again...I've seen him miss from closer.
- Higgy always looks ready for nap time.
- So far the hockey I've watched on TV has been boring...

Random Friday: Going regular

I don't care much for predictions and standings, nor do I give a damn about them. Season introductions are fairly vague and have been done on every other website anyway, so one less wouldn't offset the world as we know. And with the season coming around the corner, I'd like to make note of a few things that need to be put to pasture.
Here are a few issues I no longer want to hear about in this hockey year of our Lord 2009-2010 (listed in no particular order):
Luongo's tears
That's right you Canuckleheads! Now that you've got him locked up for a thousand years, I don't want to hear any of you complain that he should a) be traded, b) relinquish captaincy, or c) be traded when that second round ousting comes along (if they make it by then...that schedule looks rather evil). Olympic scapegoat notwithstanding.
The Phoenix doth falter
Either move it or fold it and draft disperse the players already. I'm sick of hearing about you and tired of watching the socialist platform that seems to be the key point of fear concerning health care reform feed that team's lifeline. Yes! Profit sharing is like socialism! Fear it!
Hab's captaincy void
Team990 suggested the C goes to the first person who goes out and punches Lucic.
"But he doesn't speak French"
But you don't speak English. Clearly it evens out.
Price vs Halak, or "Oh! The humanity!"
Every Dryden needs a Bunny. Every Roy needs a Hayward. And every Price needs a Halak. Deal with it.
Curse of the Barber Pole
They won't be wearing them anyway because it buzzes with the TV (and their eyes) so stop beating that dead horse every time you see "Centennial Jersey Night".
Metropolit
There's nothing wrong with Glen Metropolit. Then why is every armchair GM suggesting to waiver him after camp? Why would you hope to lose one of the more consistent players from a playoff series that had little to cheer for? The Bell Center faithful let him know how much they appreciated his work, maybe you can too? Besides, Chipper can be his wingman while Big George is flat on his back.
Kovalchuk
Haha, keep dreaming.
The Smurfs
Last I looked the Red Wings weren't exactly tall. Sidney Crosby is like 5'10". Versteeg ain't exactly a giant. Neither is Brendan Morrow. It's getting old. One would just need to watch David Desharnais to understand that a small package has a huge upside (like being under the line of sight, they'll never know you've stolen the puck until it's too late). And Brian Gionta is still taller than me.
Controversies! They sell papers!
Markov eats toast WITHOUT BUTTER! He must know the mob! News at 11!
A pocket full of RFAs
Like last year's list of UFAs, I'll just say talking about it then was annoying. Continuing with the RFAs is even more so.
Genius and Jackass
Apparently whenever a Hab does it, it's scandalous. Gainey forces Kovy to take a break (because he wouldn't otherwise), oh shocking! But when Babcock forces his failtender Osgood to take a week off, it's absolutely brilliant.
Brian Burke
He who talks loud, saying nothing.
Price was rushed! Latendresse should have been in Hamilton!
No he wasn't. Where the hell else would he have played at the time? Next!
Carey Price's weight
Fat, skinny, overweight, underweight, 25 pounds lighter, regaining the 25 pounds while having a beer, losing 25 pounds while vomiting via stomach flu... Seriously folks, as a lady, don't talk about his weight. I'm worried we'll develop the first bulimic goaltender.
Let's start a riot!
I actually laughed when they played that song during warmup. Hilarious. But if you aren't from Montreal, then you obviously don't know that riots occur at least once a year (more if that group of anarchists are more angry at the police for some reason, apparently burning other people's stuff proves a point). Every time there's that Police Brutality march the anarchists come out to burn stuff, which aggravates the situation and brings out the riot squad for a first hand demonstration of police brutality. (What are they supposed to do? Sit back and watch as angry punks throw stuff at them?) Hell someone tried to start shit during the St-Patrick's day parade, but they were quickly whisked away into an alley and carted off in a paddy wagon. So stop bringing up that the Habs fans burn stuff all the time. Beer + mob mentality + general stupidy = going along with the rest of the stupid people. And there is proof the mob started the Stanley Cup riots. Because I always get on the metro to go cheer my team with a bag of bricks, don't you? Funny how Lakers fans aren't all forever known as "people who burn down the town when their team wins".
Gainey's last chance
Really? Guess you would think that if you were born after those dark days of Rejean Houle. Considering guys like Murray, Sather, Waddel still have their jobs, none of them can hold a candle to doing said job in the fishbowl of Montreal. Oh and the sainted Serge Savard traded away fucking Chelios. Without the luxury of being allowed to tank many years in a row for that luscious lottery pick with some actual hockey players going for number 1, he's gotta do his job the normal way. We actually have a farm system now people!
Oh Dany Boy
Heatley, accept a trade already. Alfredsson doesn't even want you anymore. By the way, I hear Habs fans are offering 24-hour Kovy Support for those nights he drives you all nuts.
Carbo! Carbo! Carbo!
stfu.
It does feel good to vent every now and then.
[Addendum - because I thought of some more but forgot about them last night. I happens when one is in vent mode]

Look!

Up in the sky!
Is it Gary Bettman's ego ballooning with the mounting debt of the Coyotes?
Is it Bertrand Raymond attempting to explain his douchebaggery with more douchebaggery?
Is it's Kovy spying on us in a fly by with his plane?
No! It's...ROOKIE CAMP! *Cue the trumpets*
Everything looks like it's condenced into one massive speedball. You can thank the Olympics for all the groin injuries to follow.
It also looks like there's no fan jamboree again. Damn.
Also announced: TICKET SALES! Unfortunately someone else is going to have to buy them for me if I'm to go. I can really only afford AHL tickets this year (of which I'm planning two games and already have tickets to one). Perhaps if I plead with my best puppy dog eyes maybe someone in the family will be kind enough to grace me with at least two tickets for the Habs-Stars game so I can see Turco fuck up live and in colour! (I love him, really). It's only 30$ to sit in the rafters. And my birthday is coming up. In fact it's the first pre-season game. Unfortunately, looking at the packages, there's no more Victory Pack! That's too bad, the Victory Pack was very fun and pretty damn cool. (A victory meant free tickets to another game of their choice). But one thing I'm confused about... Why is there a Thrashers and a Panthers game in the Penguins pack? That makes absolutely no sense. The cool pack? Centennial Jersey night! The Stars game is included (and a pre-season Pens game), plus the Leafs who I assume will come out in their own fancy leaf sweater, and you get a free Barber Pole sweater. Woo!
