I has a sad...

So they traded Andrei Kostitsyn for a 2nd round pick and got back the 5th round pick from the Hal Gill trade (basically removing the conditions with Blake Geoffrion, from what I understand of it all). For a rental, a 2nd and 5th sound ok. What...only the Red Wings apparently trade a first round pick for some dude they waived a few years ago. (Not that their firsts every really seem to do much). I'm still hoping Andrei's initial want to stay will bring him back in the summer. You know, some time away with an actual team with an actual plan might do him some good and all that. I'm still pissed he wasn't able to get his 100th goal here though. WOULD HAVE HELPED IF HE HAD SOME MORE POWERPLAY TIME THIS YEAR. YOU KNOW, FROM LIKE THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON?! Then again, I hear he likes country music so he might be happy in Nashville. Radioactive mustard yellow jerseys notwithstanding.

Whatever. I'm sure RDS and Randy Tieman are doing happy dances now that the Belamullet of fairly consistent 20 goal seasons who actually hits things is gone.

And a deal for Yannick Weber fell through. Craig Button can shut the fuck up any time now about not dumping everyone for crap. I thought you were supposed to be smart? Or did TSN just clog your brain full of Leaf shit?

Habs also pick up Brad Staubitz on waivers which is a good thing. Y'all wanted some grit and sandpaper for a proper fourth line? Well there you go. I don't mind Staubitz. Honest guy. Fights. Everything Mitch Melnick asked for so maybe now he'll stop complaining on the radio? (Ha!)

I'm guessing about the Blake Geoffrion conditions mostly because he was just called up. Logically it makes sense, now that they have the pick back and he's on the roster. I expect Louis to come back soon too but FINALLY (hopefully?) Avtsin gets the one guy he was able to play with back...

Probably the stupid trade of the day goes to the Canucks in dealing Cody Hodgson for NOT-Milan-Lucic Kassian and Gragnani. Really. Dumping the kid who gets you key goals in games the Twins tend to vanish in... And I was very happy not seeing him more than twice per year thank you. WHY must you send him to fucking Buffalo?

Poor media. I guess that was the only blockbuster deal since they were trying to hype up the Nick Schultz/Tom Gilbert swap like it was a Gretzky trade. Pretty glad my work's shitty internet conked out all day so I didn't even get a hint of what was going on (other than the Kostitsyn trade via Facebook). We usually blame Bioware, but I guess this time I'll thank them. Anyway I had an 11th Doctor audio book going about those fucking Weeping Angels. I hate those things. I never trusted creepy blank statues...

Habs 1, Bruins 2: Listless...and then!

We were on our way to absolute boredom with this. Which is hilarious considering the Bruins nightly quota is like 5 goals per game.

Fucking broken stupid Boston rink causes the puck to bounce out weird and no one else is paying attention at the little hockey player in front of an empty net. For a long while, looked like it was all the Bruins needed tonight. Habs had really nothing going for them. Well, the usual suspects were working: Eller's line, and as the night went on DD's line picked it up (I giggle every time DD takes on Chara, and he took him down with a shot to the gut to boot). After pissing off most of his fanbase, and probably most of his teammates, while back-peddling today on his comments yesterday, we were all paying close attention to Cammalleri just to see if he would indeed put his money where his mouth is. Two gifted rebounds found their way in front of him with wide open nets and he ignored both of them. Sigh.

As the game went on I gave up, and traded him for Bobby Ryan. Apparently someone else was thinking similar... (No, not Bobby Ryan).

Cammy disappeared from the bench in the third. Thought maybe Hal Gill gave him a concussion with an "errant" water bottle. But with Cammy gone, and PK being a pest, Habs kind of crept back in ever...so...slightly. They looked like they had more jump than the previous two periods. It turned sour when Gorges accidentally tipped a shot that was going wide in behind Price. He knew it, Price didn't look too happy. And with PK drawing the ire of the Bruins, took two out with him to the penalty box. Who else? Yannick Weber said he thought he was better than some of the guys that were playing and yes, people got annoyed with that comment. In reality, English is not his first language, and I think he meant he believes he could bring more than what he saw from the rafters. I mean, I was watching Chris Campoli and thinking the same thing. How is Campoli a better option than Weber?! At least if Weber turns over the puck you can just chalk it up to a young guy still learning his options. (Noticed Eller and Diaz are getting better at decisions in their own end, even though they still make errors. You live and die with your youth to make them better in the future). And besides, it's the Bruins. I swear Weber has scored 90% of his goals against the Bruins. And all of them are probably on Tim Thomas.

They had another real good chance shorthanded near the end of the game. A few more cases of holding onto the puck too long. PK came out of nowhere and launched it on net, surprising everyone and forcing a save. Bruins got nothing on their powerplays.

Odd that it's the healthy scratched kid who puts his money where his mouth is.

MEANWHILE...
Cammalleri was actually pulled from the game and sent back to the hotel. Not like he was contributing to the game in any way, shape or form. If you didn't watch the game just look at his stat sheet. It was the only one that was blank right across the board. Not even a single turnover.

Probably should have just scratched him altogether.

Frankly I don't care if a guy was pulled mid-game for a trade. I've heard about this type of thing before. But because it's the HABS oh god forbid they work like the rest of the league! I mean, hey, who doesn't mind sending high-priced NHLers to the Minors all because you made a shitty contract or forcing a guy to go work in Europe because you screwed up. That's real class right there eh?

I wanted him to do like Weber: Work. Put the puck in the net. Show us you care for real and not say that you do. Actions speak louder than words, sometimes. Instead we got more floating.

Cammy was traded back to Calgary along with Ramo and a 5th, for Rene Bourque, Patrick Holland (Tri-City), and a 2nd round pick. ALSO: shed a shitload of salary. I have no idea how Calgary will stuff this all under the cap but that's their problem. And I think Jay Feaster is an idiot, but that's just me (hello Lightning). Also note: Cammy had limited no trade clause where he could veto about 7 teams, so when a GM perks up and says "I didn't know he was on the block, I would have traded for him!" I'll say that maybe that GM's team is on his no-go list. We pretty much all knew he wanted his old haunts first, and the rule is trade out of conference first if you can.

If you think they should have waited for the deadline, think again. The great Brian Burke is PRAISED for his school of thought with regards to trading long before the deadline. If it's the Habs, they get bashed. We're told on both sides the deal was being worked out for months now. Bourque's suspensions keep getting in the way (he'll be back Sunday). They're about the same age, but Bourque makes half what Cammy makes, and currently has more goals on a team just as shitty. I don't care about his playoff performance: you have to get there first. (And about that playoff performance, Cammy's sucked before coming here, too).

End of the day, Habs get young (prospect), cheaper, bigger, and get a coveted 2nd round pick.

When the Habs hosted the Flames at their first home game this season, Bourque tweeted "Can't wait for the game tonight at the Bell Center. Love playing in MTL." He scored 2 goals with the same amount of ice time Cammy was bitching about in a 4-1 win for the Flames. And I know how Bourque plays... which sometimes isn't much different from Benoit Pouliot. But let's face it, both guys needed out. Cammy's heart disappeared as well.

Oh and Troy Brouwer says hi.

Quotes on the trade:
"Interesting optics for CGY. They didn't think Cam was worth resigning at 6 mil after getting 39, but now he is worth 6 mil on pace for 18." (Brian Wilde, CTV.)

"I wasn't concerned with what was going on with Michael at that time. I was too busy trying to stop the puck." (Carey Price after the game)

"On s'en sacre." (Mathieu Darche)

(EDIT) For your information:
And this is why the timing of the trade happened. I do believe a few freaking out "reporters" and snarky bloggers out there owe the Habs a little apology...

Disgruntled? There's a trade for that.

Funny how all the love and adulation in the world can't get a hometown boy to roll up his socks and just try harder to earn his ice time.

Max Lapierre was one of the most popular players on the team, for reasons that confound everyone else. A dirty player by some standards. A noted diver, who now can't walk away from getting his face smashed into the glass from a blatant hit from behind without taking a penalty himself (undeservedly). So he yaps. That's his job. That's his role. Forecheck hard, take defensive zone faceoffs, kill penalties, hit, annoy, disturb, and score the odd goal to give the team some secondary scoring (or tertiary scoring).

But Yappy was barely doing this.

Every year he promised us that how he played in the playoffs was how he will work the whole year. And every year he failed to accomplish this. Though, this year he teased us with being awesome in preseason...

When shakeups occurred, he was even put on top lines to use his big body to clear space for his skilled linemates and bother opposing goalies.

Then his icetime took a hit in Washington in a 3-0 loss. I have no idea how this game really played out, but Yappy played 4 minutes and was apparently very unhappy. He led the team in hits with 104, but how many of those were on the glass instead of the player? Averaging just over 11 minutes per game, taken off the penalty kill to the point where even Cammalleri is surprisingly doing OK on it (defend with offense, like they do in Detroit I guess). Has 5 goals, 3 assists, and another team high 63 penalty minutes but for a guy who's supposed to be defensively responsible, he's a -7 which is team worst and tied with Gomez (those early slump games really hit him here).

Guys in these roles play like every game, every shift, is their last because there are other options readily available to replace you if you don't. Driving around town in a purple Hummer like a king isn't the role of King Pest. Thinking because your name is local and the fans love you regardless of your play doesn't automatically give you a roster spot. Right now the Habs have 3 local kids all eyeing Yappy's spot, and one of them even has the #40 on his back. Gabriel Dumont may be 4-inches shorter but he's 5-inches greater of a true bulldog on skates. Never mind the fact Ryan White could easily take over the role of King Pest right now...

And asking for a trade because you're unhappy YOU aren't performing to how the team needs you to perform to the point they believe you are expendable? I don't like the trade but when I hear stuff like this from a roleplayer bottom-6 guy, I say goodbye. When your best moment of the season was putting Eye of the Tiger on the locker room radio to honour Cammy's first NHL fight, you best be looking in the mirror of what you can do better.

Then again, I wish they could trade Jacques Martin somewhere...

Yappy in his glory

Now the Ducks are incredibly stocked up on assholes. Now marketing for the Habs/Bell/Videotron has to change all their ads, though. See the one that goes through the ages? Fans watching the game on TV with their idol's number on their backs goes from guys like Cournoyer and Gainey and Roy to...Lapierre, which is such a fucking joke in itself it's terrible.

Coming back is an RC Cola Josh Gorges for depth on defense, Brett Festerling, and a 5th round pick (essentially getting back the conditional pick sent to Long Island for Wiz). Festerling is an interesting guy. He grew up with Price and played with him in Tri-City, he's buddies with Lucic as he captain the Vancouver Giants (won the Memorial Cup), and he's taking the long road into the pros. He was awarded the Defenceman of the Tournament for the U-18 when he played with Team Canada. Struggled a bit, wasn't drafted, signed with Anaheim, and was among their final cuts every time. He did get to play with Niedermayer, which was one of his happiest days ever. With the injuries and the age of our D, and the fact Mathieu Carle is unsurprisingly injured, Habs need depth on D. Getting a good guy back who has history with some of your core players never hurts.

You can consider the trade addition by subtraction. David Desharnais was recalled just prior to the trade, as the team needs an offensive spark considering they have a hard time scoring 1 goal let alone 3... Also he's good on faceoffs, which is another struggle of the Habs.

Bye bye, mon cowboy...

Steve Begin has been traded to the Dallas Stars upon arrival in Philadelphia. I'd like to extend my thanks to plumber for his heart and hard work, and uncanny abilities to pick the worst time to get a penalty. (Though he was actually behaving well this year). It was more than obvious he wasn't going to be on the team next season, and with Stewart pretty much stealing his job away and the 4th line being pretty good right now with Chipper and Dandy/Laraque, this move doesn't come as a surprise. Of course a guy like Begin isn't going to net you a big return, but coming back is a big journeyman defenseman who was battled over through waivers between Chicago and Dallas, Doug Janik. Assuming he clears waivers again, he'll be helping out the Bulldogs, who like the Stars can use all the help they can get. Hope Steve gets the playing time he very much deserves, and the Stars could use the man considering how injured their roster is right now. Lucky Steve! You get to play with Turco! Good luck!
